Uses real map data
We use the actual building footprint from OpenStreetMap to identify the rear wall — not just an estimate.
What is a south-facing garden?
A south-facing garden is one where the back of the property faces south, meaning the garden is oriented towards the sun's path across the sky. In the UK, the sun travels from east to west along a southerly arc, so a south-facing garden receives the most direct sunlight throughout the day — particularly valuable during spring and summer.
When buying or renting a UK property, garden orientation is one of the most asked-about features. A south-facing garden means more usable outdoor space, better conditions for plants and vegetables, and a warmer, more enjoyable space to spend time in.
How we calculate garden orientation
Most tools simply point a compass at your address and guess. We go further. After geocoding your address, we fetch the actual building footprint from OpenStreetMap — the real polygon outline of your house. We then measure each wall's distance to the nearest road: the wall closest to the road is the front of the house, and the wall furthest from the road is the rear — where the garden is.
The garden's compass bearing is calculated from the building's centroid through the rear wall's midpoint, giving you an accurate orientation rather than a rough estimate. You can also drag the map pin to fine-tune the location before running the analysis.
Frequently asked questions
Enter your full UK address above — including postcode — and tap Find. We geocode the address, show it on a map so you can confirm the pin, then calculate the garden orientation using building footprint data. The result shows the compass direction the garden faces and whether it qualifies as south-facing.
We classify a garden as south-facing if its orientation falls between 135° (south-east) and 225° (south-west) on the compass. True south is 180°. Gardens in this range receive meaningful direct sunlight for the majority of the day in the UK.
Yes. South-facing gardens are consistently cited by UK estate agents as one of the most desirable property features. Research suggests they can add between 5% and 10% to a property's value, as buyers place a significant premium on all-day sunshine and usable outdoor space.
If we cannot find your building's footprint, we fall back to using the nearest road to estimate the front of the property and calculate the garden as the opposite direction. This is less precise, so we flag it on the result card as a road estimate with low confidence. Try dragging the pin directly onto the centre of your property for better accuracy.
